The NEDS is a set of hospital-based emergency department databases included in the HCUP family. These databases are created by AHRQ through a Federal-State-Industry partnership.

Please refer to the information below for corrections to the NEDS data set. In some cases, there is a downloadable document that either provides more information or provides a program to correct the problem.



2007 NEDS

• 2007 NEDS Version 1 was released in January 2010.



• 2007 NEDS Version 2 was released in April 2010.
• In Version 1, children’s hospitals with trauma centers were included in the non-trauma hospital stratum.
• In Version 2, these hospitals were reclassified to be included in the sampling frame at their appropriate trauma level.
• In 2007 there were 36 children’s hospitals nationwide with trauma centers that were reclassified. While the number of hospitals reclassified is relatively low, this change strengthened NEDS value in examining pediatric ED services. The process for identifying children’s hospitals with trauma centers is described in Introduction to the NEDS 2007 (PDF file, 176 KB).
• The impact on the overall NEDS sample was relatively modest.
• However, analysis of pediatric ED services by trauma level could be substantially impacted by this change.

2006 NEDS

• 2006 NEDS Version 1 was released in June 2009.
• NEDS contains a count of the number of CPT codes reported on a discharge record (NCPT). While only 15 CPT procedure codes are retained on the NEDS, NCPT helps an analyst understand how much information was truncated.
• In version 1, there are about 70 records with invalid value of "**" for NCPT. The value of NCPT should have been greater than 99 on these records. This is fixed in Version 2.


• 2006 NEDS Version 2 was released in August 2009.
• In version 2, the NCPT variable was set to 99, if 100 or more CPT codes were reported.
• This was the only change between 2006 NEDS Versions 1 and 2.


• 2006 NEDS Version 3 was released in April 2010.
• In Versions 1 and 2, children’s hospitals with trauma centers were included in the non-trauma hospital stratum.
• In Version 3, these hospitals were reclassified to be included in the sampling frame at their appropriate trauma level.
