The NIS Hospital Ownership Files are hospital-level files designed to facilitate analysis of the NIS by hospital ownership categories. The NIS is part of a family of databases and software tools developed as part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), a Federal-State-Industry partnership sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. HCUP databases, tools, and software inform decision making at the national, State, and community levels.

The NIS Hospital Ownership Files contain the following data elements:

The H_CONTRL data element contains the following three hospital ownership categories without any collapsing:

1. Government, nonfederal
2. Private, non-profit
3. Private, invest-own

The H_CONTRL data element was previously available prior to the 1998 NIS. Beginning with the 1998 NIS, it was replaced with the HOSP_CONTROL data element, which was collapsed to reduce the number of ownership strata in some regions. The NIS Hospital Ownership File provides the original H_CONTRL data element, containing hospital ownership categories without any collapsing, to facilitate analysis of the NIS by hospital ownership categories. Note, however, that H_CONTRL was set to missing in a few instances to satisfy HCUP Partner requirements.

The NIS Hospital Ownership File contains one record for each hospital (HOSPID) and year in the 1998-2007 NIS files. It may be merged with a NIS Hospital file by YEAR and HOSPID. It is available for download as either a SAS File or an ASCII Comma Delimited File.
