Beginning with 2005, detailed charges (CHGn) are associated with the identified revenue centers (REVCDn) and the units of service (UNITn). For example, CHG1 applies to the revenue center in REVCD1 and the units of service specified in UNIT1. Iowa reports detailed charges (CHGn) associated with standard UB-92 revenue codes stored in REVCDn. Iowa does not collapse or redefine ranges of revenue codes.

Nebraska provided the charge detail in a separate, linkable file. During HCUP processing, the source file was manipulated to be consistent with the format of detail charge information in other states. The source file had one record per service, multiple records per discharge. The HCUP file has one record per discharge that includes all of the provided detail.

For combination ambulatory surgery (AS) and emergency department (ED) events, CHG1 includes charges for emergency department services and REVCD1 has been set to "0450" to indicate ED services. No other detailed charge information is available for these combination records.

Beginning in 2006, REVCHGn is used to present detailed charges associated with revenue codes. CHGn is no longer used to present the detailed charges in the NJ SEDD file.

In 2005 and 2006 South Carolina provided the charge detail in a separate, linkable file that included detailed charges which are associated with revenue centers and units of service. Due to incomplete charge information, this information was not retained on the HCUP databases in 2005 and 2006. The line item revenue codes were used to assign the HCUP outpatient identifiers (HCUP_AS, HCUP_ED, and HCUP_OS) but there is no detailed charge information on the 2005 and 2006 South Carolina SASD and SEDD. The line item revenue codes were also used to subtract professional fees from total charges for 2005, but total charges was not on 2006 SASD and SEDD.

Prior to 2005, South Carolina provided HCUP with discretely defined charge buckets, and associated units of service. The number of detailed charges supplied by South Carolina changes across years.

• Prior to 1995, South Carolina supplied 51 detailed charges and no charge for "Other Charges".
• In 1995, South Carolina supplied 52 detailed charges. They created charge fields (CHG1-CHG51) that were comparable to previous years and added a new charge field (CHG52) labeled "Other Charges".
• From 1996-2004 and 2007-present South Carolina supplied 78 detailed charges. Some charges are an addition to those previously supplied. For example, starting in 1996 there is a category for room and board charges from a Hospice. Other charges give more detail than previously supplied. For example, prior to 1996 there was one charge for ICU charges. Starting in 1996, there are 5 different ICU charges.
