Source Files
The HCUP Mississippi inpatient files were constructed from discharge level hospital data collected by the Mississippi State Department of Health. For data years 2013-2014, Mississippi hospitals retroactively submitted data. Some hospitals were not able to provide complete information as far back as 2013 due to changes in some of their data systems. Because of this, a few hospitals may be missing some discharges for 2013 and/or 2014.
Types of Facilities Included in the Files Provided to HCUP by the Partner
The Mississippi State Department of Health supplied hospital discharge data from reporting facilities that include acute care hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, alcohol and substance abuse hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and long-term acute care hospitals. Excluded are federal hospitals.
A comparison of the number of hospitals included in the SID and the number of hospitals reported in the AHA Annual Survey is available starting in data year 2014.
Hospitals do not always report data for a full calendar year. Some hospitals open or close during the year; other hospitals have technical problems that prevent them from reporting data for all months in a year.
Inclusion of Stays in Special Units
Discharges for stays in special units such as medical rehabilitation, behavioral health, skilled nursing care, and skilled swing bed are included in the file. Excluded are discharges for intermediate care (long-term care), custodial/respite care, and hospice. However, these records cannot be identified.
Exclusion of Records During HCUP Data Processing
Records with a discharge disposition of "still a patient" and "admitted as an inpatient" were excluded from the HCUP Mississippi inpatient data.
